First off, not getting it *yet*. Nintendo’s one job was to show me that there was something there at launch that was absolutely must have and they didn’t do that. I’m excited about the system and it will be a console I own, but there was nothing that screamed must have. That being said, there was a lot that intrigued me about Switch. It seems like a dream to develop for, as outside of dual screens (and possible streetpass) they’ve basically hit every Nintendo developmental increment since the NES. If I were an indie I would be losing my mind over it; there isn’t a genre of game that couldn’t be made to work on it. Speaking of
They did do a job of showing off some games. My personal want list:
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Arms
Splatoon 2
Super Mario Odyssey
Xenoblade 2
Fire Emblem Musou
Dragon Quest Heroes I+II
Shin Megami Tensei
Octopath Traveler
No More Heroes 3
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Of those 11, only one is a launch title and maybe two more are launch window. Honestly, the only game that’s enough of a must that I would get a system to play it is Xenoblade 2 (and I doubt that’s coming in 2017). All in all it was a very poor showing. And the aftermath was ever worse.
I’m sorry, what? These prices are absolutely insane. There’s no way people are going to go for this. Nintendo really killed their own hype. I wanted better.
Fortunately not a super heavy comic week, but I still managed to screw things up for myself. This week I’ve read
Avengers #3
Batman #14
Captain America: Sam Wilson #17
Champions #4
DC Comics Bombshells #76
Giant Days #22
Harley Quinn #11
Hawkeye #2
Injustice: Ground Zero #14
Justice League vs Suicide Squad #3
Nova #2
Saga #41
Shade the Changing Girl #4
Superman #14
The Unstoppable Wasp #1
The Unworthy Thor #3
U.S.Avengers #1
Unfollow #15
LANA! I didn’t expect to see that character in Sam Wilson of all places. Pity it was fake. Batman was aces. Champions feels like it’s hitting its stride; the next issue should be amazing. DC Bombshells is the first comic book musical I can recall. Harley felt like a holding pattern; the Joker is back and causing chaos, but nothing happened. Hawkeye is great and I think she’s in the next Avengers Academy event. @1979semifinalist is killing it. Giant Days continues to be the best. USAvengers has my favorite type of shenanigans. Wasp is super hyper charming and makes me sad again Mockingbird got cancelled. I’ll say it again: the first arc of Mockingbird is one of the best things ever. Superman looks like it’s starting an event. Might drop it til it’s over, specially since I dropped New Superman. Is it just me or is JLvSS going super fast? It’s weird but DC as a whole feels like they are secretly having this massive event in the background that they can only tease and reference obliquely. Saga! Bruh! Love that book. Nova is making me feel bad for Sam but Champions yay! also, is anyone else reading Injustice? I like them not making me play the game :D Lastly, Unworthy Thor continues to be strong and Unfollow continues to be completely bonkers.
I made the mistake of reading all of The Wicked + The Divine this week. Now I’m having trouble thinking of anything else.
Sorry Belle. I love how smart you are, but Moana is a superhero. Honestly, this felt more like a feminist take on a Superhero film (plus songs) than a traditional Disney Princess film. Romance? Naw bruh, how about we have a massive action set piece instead? I didn’t know a ton of the story going in and I think it’s better that way. That being said, the plot, good as it was, wasn’t as shocking as Frozen’s big twist (though there were a few unexpected twists). Visually, this was an absolutely stunning film. There was an entire team in the credits dedicated to hair with another dedicated to water and it shows. Speaking of, be sure to sit all the way through the credits. There’s a post credit stinger that was a delight to see.
Moana is a fantastic addition to the Disney Princess line and my only knock isn’t against the film, but rather at @disneyanimation. How dare you kill Disney Infinity before I could get that incredible Moana playset?
I finally saw the new Ghostbusters! I know, I know, I’m so far behind that all the controversy is over and no one cares, but as a Ghostbusters fan I really wanted to form an opinion for myself. I grabbed a few juiceboxes of Ecto Cooler, and my sister, and headed to the theater for an early morning showing. (I’m frugal a cheapskate and I like to wait for $6.00 showings.)
First, I’ll write up the Ecto Cooler review, then I’ll share my thoughts on the movie. (Also, check out this slime background! It’s awesome and I’m pretty proud of myself.)
Oh hey! If anyone was considering getting a cheap Kindle Fire, it’s not worth it unless you are deep deep in the Amazon ecosystem. The App Store is significantly out of date: the Google Play app will be on version 2.7 while the Amazon App Store version is on 1.2. It’s hard as hell to change defaults (I still can’t get the search to default to google instead of bing) and the 128GB microSD I got off eBay can’t store most of the things you would want it too. (side note: you can get some fantastic deals on sd cards on eBay. 256GB for $9). IIRC, you can load some (not all) apps, you can put some videos, you can put some pictures. You can’t load your kindle books. You can’t load your audible books. And a number of apps with storage (for example a manga app) can’t access it.
If that’s not a deal breaker, it’s decent enough device. Turning off wifi if your storage is full is stupid. Silk is an awful browser. Screen is nice and the device can take a beating. I’d think it would be optimal for a kid or as previously mentioned, someone really into the Amazon ecosystem.
Deleted the Blade & Soul CBT data last night. I know enough to about the game to make some assumptions on if I’ll like the full client. The voice acting was awkward at best and the controls are kind of a mess. That being said, b&s has one of my all time favorite traversal systems in an MMO. Double tap forward to sprint, space bar to jump, and space bar again to glide through the air. And I could see that they were going to add many many more movement options as you leveled. The action gameplay is a neat change, but the current key bindings aren’t great. When I have a controller set up (native controller support!), I’ll deffo give it another shot.
In the world of Kingdom Hearts, Kairi is light. I’ve performed my role with this in mind, but how to capture this light is different between now and before. To continue to stay in the light, one must be incredibly strong; I had felt that when I became an adult. Kairi, who has been able to stay in the light, is a wonderful child, and there are so many things I can learn from her.
After a not very subtle tease by Disney Infinity head honcho John Vignocchi, today it was leaked that the teenage super spy would be joining the Disney toys to life crossover. Attached is the first picture of Kim’s figure.
The frozen California rolls
I reviewed last week were better than I expected, and I was able to eat
all 15 pieces, so I figured I’d try the next flavor, Shrimp and Avocado.
I
was both intrigued and slightly horrified by this product when I saw it
in Aldi’s circular last week. A few people tried to talk me out of it
after I posted it on Instagram, but I decided to go ahead and do it
anyway. (‘Cause I’m such a rebel.) That’s right, I’m about to
review frozen sushi from a low-budget grocery store. Fingers crossed
that this goes well and I don’t get food poisoning!
So,
I freaking love Aldi, and I love sushi, but I’m still not sure about
this one. I mean…it’s frozen sushi. From a grocery store. None of
those things sound like a good idea, and yet, here I am!
Meiji Rich Banana Biscuits- Asian Food Market: Cherry Hill, NJ
I
freaking love banana, and I’ve been waiting for Oreo to release a
chocolate banana themed cookie for years. The closest we’ve gotten are
the Banana Split Oreo’s, and even though those are one of my favorite limited edition Oreo’s of all time, they didn’t satisfy my craving.
The
second I saw this on the shelves I immediately tossed it into my cart.
I’ve tried a LOT of Meiji products in the past, but never their sandwich
cookies. Even though this is an entirely new product for me, I’m going
into this review with really high expectations. Let’s hope that these
cookies will finally fulfill my chocolate-banana-less Oreo life.
Caffé Bene Cookies & Cream Bingsu - H-Mart - Cherry Hill, NJ
Hello
everyone, I’m back and I’m finally posting reviews again! I hate that
it’s been so long, but the last few weeks I’ve been stretched really
thin.
I just wanted to give a quick shout-out/thank you
to those of you who visited my table in Otakon’s Artist Alley! I was
able to meet so many wonderful people, and we talked about everything
from video games, to food. It made me really happy, and I hope to see
you all again next year. (I’m applying for a table, but it’s by lottery, so it’s not always guaranteed.)
Enough rambling, let’s get right into today’s review!
Japanese Style Brown Sugar Mochi- Asian Food Market - Cherry Hill, NJ
Remember this from my last Asian Food Haul Video?
It was one of the last boxes in the store, and usually when something
is selling out, it means that it’s really good. I didn’t want to miss
out on it, since products aren’t always restocked at the Asian Food
Market, so I grabbed a box to review. Now it’s finally time to see if my
intuition was right, or if I’m just another mindless sheep.
